Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker – The Best “Low Cost” Smoker

The Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker or WSM is one of the most popular smokers among those that like to cook their own slow cooked, smoked barbeque. It is easy to use, easy to clean, cooks for a long time with one load of charcoal, and it does a great job.

I have several cookers but I always come back to using the WSM when I have a small load barbeque cooking task. It is great for cooking one butt or picnic, brisket, turkey breast, fish, or a small load of ribs.

I forgot to mention that the WSM is a water cooker. This means that it comes with a ceramic bowl that sits just above the fire. The water keeps the meat nice and moist.

You can add flavor to the meat by adding fruit juice to the water. Some cooks also add soft drinks such as Pepsi, Coke, and Dr. Pepper (Dr. Pepper works great for brisket).

Keep in mind that use of the water pan is not mandatory. Some cooks put sand in the bowl to distribute the heat evenly and some take the water bowl out completely.

The best characteristic of the WSM is price. These cookers are among the most economical on the market. As I stated on the How to Barbeque page, you can spend a lot of money on your barbeque smoker. With the WSM you don’t have to.
